Emma Benichou is an Australian artist whose work spans drawing, painting, and curatorial practice. Over a career of nearly two decades, her practice reflects her belief in the profound power of art to connect us to ourselves, each other, and the environments we inhabit.
Born in Perth in 1986, Emma’s artistic journey began with a passion for drawing that has remained central to her practice. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Western Australia, where she was awarded the Mark Howlett Prize for academic excellence, and completed First Class Honours in Drawing at RMIT in Melbourne, receiving the Siemens Fine Art Scholarship. Her work has been exhibited nationally in solo and group exhibitions, earning awards and grants such as the Emerging Talent Award at the Wesfarmers Telethon Art Exhibition and an Artstart Grant.
In Melbourne, alongside her art practice, Emma worked in some of the city’s leading commercial art galleries including Gallerysmith. She also co-founded and directed two art galleries, Monday Week and Gallerysmith Project Space, where she curated exhibitions that championed diverse artistic voices and innovative approaches to art. These roles established her as a respected advocate and connector within the art community.
After more than a decade in Melbourne, Emma returned to Perth to focus full-time on her practice. While her early work centered on portraiture and figurative studies, her focus has shifted to include capturing the emotional dimensions of landscape painting. Her art distills what is seen to reveal the unseen—an essence that speaks to the deeper truths of her subjects and landscapes.
